World News – Pakistan and NATO officials downplay Taliban report

NATO and Pakistan leaders were scrambling to downplay a leaked report Wednesday featuring testimony by Taliban detainees who claim they are winning the war in Afghanistan, and poised to take over again once international forces leave, thanks in large measure to help from Pakistan?s security services.

NATO officials confirmed the existence of the report, called the State of Taliban, was which obtained by the BBC and The Times of London and is based on 27,000 interrogations of 4,000 Taliban prisoners.?

Claims that Pakistan?s top spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate, commonly known as the ISI, support the Taliban in Afghanistan are not new, but the report can still be regarded as a damning assessment of the war dragging into its 11th year.

So it was not surprising to see myriad responses to the allegations ? not just from NATO and Pakistani leaders, but Taliban sources, too.

Here are some of the responses to the report compiled by NBC News reporters in Afghanistan and Pakistan on Wednesday:

BBC: Secret report reveals Pakistan-Taliban ties

Taliban commanders:
Three senior Taliban field commanders in Afghanistan’s troubled provinces Paktika, Khost and Kunar told NBC News they could neither confirm nor deny any support from Pakistan.

They said only that they received support in the form of financing, weapons, and fighters from “various Islamic countries” to continue their “jihad.” They said financing and the availability of weapons were no longer problems for them.

The Taliban leaders, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said seizing control of Afghanistan will be easy once foreign forces withdraw from the country.

“There are pro-mujahedeen Islamic countries and a large number of kindhearted people who have been supporting us in this jihad against the non-Muslims who had invaded our homeland,” one commander based in Paktika, near the border with Pakistan, told NBC News.

The mujahedeen refers to Islamic fighters who fought the Soviet occupation in the 1980s.

The Taliban stopped trusting Pakistan after it joined U.S. and helped remove them from power, the Paktika commander said.

Another Taliban commander in Kunar’s Watapur areas said the United States has lost the war against Taliban and was now coming up with excuses to explain its defeat.

“We are back in power now because of our sacrifices and support of mujahedeen from all over the world, including Europe. Even the Afghan government and those influential Afghans who had earlier supported Americans in their occupation of Afghanistan had accepted us as the next rulers of the country. We had set up sharia (Islamic) courts in Kunar and Nuristan and have our own police and governors.? The Afghan police and government officials are referring cases to us,” the Kunar commander said.

Another Taliban leader, known as explosives expert, said “gone are the days when Taliban suffered from shortages of resources and weapons to fight against their enemy.”

The group had now developed good contacts with “mujahedeen groups and their sympathizers” in every corner of the world, he claimed.

?The Americans are leaving soon and that’s why we started financing and strengthening all groups that are against us. The Americans wanted to create the same situation that emerged after Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan and all former mujahedeen groups indulged in internal fighting and caused heavy losses to the Afghan people,” the militant leader said.

Pakistan’s response?
The report was revealed at an inopportune time for Pakistan?s Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar who was in Kabul on a diplomatic visit on Wednesday. “I can disregard this as a potentially strategic leak … This is old wine in an even older bottle,” she told reporters in Kabul, reiterating Pakistan’s denials it backs militant groups.

Three Pakistani security officials tell NBC News that without having seen the report, they would be unable to comment in any detail. None, however, said that they were surprised by the nature of the leaked information.

“The theme of the article is not new,” said one senior Pakistani security official, referring to the BBC report. “So, what’s new?” said another, when asked about the NATO.

There is a widely-held belief among Pakistan’s security establishment that their country has played the role of scapegoat for what they see as a failed U.S. mission in Afghanistan, and today’s news seemed to fit that pattern, to many.

“The report has not been made available,” said Pakistan Military spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas. “And leaks are not worth us commenting on.”

?[NATO] reiterated again the ISI involvement with Taliban.? Everyone obviously knew that ISI is supporting the Taliban.?

?ISI is not just supporting them but they are controlling them.? Everything we see and hear from the Taliban is organized and written by the ISI. This is something pretty obvious and this has been going on since 1994.?

?Right now, there is a huge rift between the Taliban.? The Taliban who are fighting inside of Afghanistan are against reconciliation.? And they?re angry at their leadership.?

Pashtoon said this is good news for stability.? He says that Taliban fighters feel betrayed by their leaders and the ISI for supporting peace talks after they have shed so much blood fighting for the cause.

Afghan Foreign Ministry: ?NO COMMENT.?

Moving Things Around in the Archives, or H.A. Wilson and Family …

Things are being rearranged in the archives these days. As new collections come in to be processed, some boxes from the workspace in the basement are moved upstairs, which means that other boxes already on the upstairs shelves have to be moved out to the Library Service Center. I don?t really like this very much, incidentally, since I?m lazy and now will have to relearn where things are located. A happier result of all this commotion is that some things have bubbled up to the surface that I might never have looked at otherwise.

One of these things is a small scrapbook that belonged to Joan Wilson, the daughter of Rice?s first physics professor H.A. Wilson. There isn?t much Rice-related material in it, as it mainly covers the years she attended St. Mary?s College (now a high school) in Raleigh, North Carolina. I did discover, though, tucked away in a two small sleeves, a couple photos of the Wilson family at home. This is pretty good?we don?t have many pictures of H.A. Wilson and I found two more nice ones in one day.

The pictures are completely unidentified. Apart from Professor Wilson and his wife, I don?t really know who anyone is, not even Joan (although I believe she is the young woman standing on the left in the photo above). I?m also a bit adrift about dating these pictures. They?re quite outside my usual experience. I do know that the Wilsons moved in to that house in 1945. (In what has to be an upset it?s still standing, between two much newer behemoths.)

Anyone have any thoughts?

One more thing in the scrapbook made me laugh:

Honor or not, I opened it. Nothing incendiary in there.

Bonus: As I looked through the scrapbook, it dawned on me that I had seen a photo of Joan Wilson in a different collection in the Woodson. Here?s a beautiful portrait of her done by Vera Prasilova Scott, the wife of Rice physicist Arthur Scott and a stunning portrait photographer.

COMMENTARY | Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in response to the State of the Union address by Barack Obama. President Obama discussed the “Buffett Rule,” which says essentially that very wealthy people should shoulder a fair share of the nation’s tax burden, according to CBS. Cantor attempted to sting Obama in his commentary — but was Cantor’s speech honest?

Warren Buffett’s secretary, Debbie Bosanek, is said to have paid a higher tax rate than her billionaire boss, according to the Washington Post. Cantor claimed to “care about Warren Buffett’s secretary,” according to Politico. Cantor rhetoric then took a confusing turn by trying to pass the buck for his own party’s policies and blame the tax inequality problem on the Obama Administration.

Let’s take a quick look at the facts.

If you examine the tax history chart from the Tax Policy Center you can see what the highest tax rates have been since income taxes were established. The top tax rate has been exactly the same since the Bush tax cuts for tax year 2003. The Obama administration has not raised the marginal income tax level.

Here’s another fact you can see: During the Reagan-Bush I era the highest tax rate dropped like a rock while the economy tanked. During the Clinton years it was raised a bit, and the economy prospered. During the Bush II era it dropped again, and look, what a shock — the economy tanked.

If Buffett pays a lower tax rate than Bosanek it’s not because Obama made her pay more. It’s because right-wing administrations keep lowering the taxes, letting rich people pay less.

The lesson to be learned here is that a nation cannot prosper while the wealthy continue a class war against the poor and redistribute wealth from the poor to the rich by failing to pay their fair share.

If the Obama administration is to blame in any way for this situation it’s by failing to raise taxes on the wealthy investor class to reverse the catastrophic harm caused by the unending efforts of the right wing to protect the rich.

College reduces odds for marriage among disadvantaged

For those with few social advantages, college is a prime pathway to financial stability, but it also unexpectedly lowers their odds of ever marrying, according to a study by Cornell University sociologist Kelly Musick being published in the February issue of the Journal of Marriage and Family.

The findings suggest that social and cultural factors, not just income, are central to marriage decisions. Men and women from the least advantaged backgrounds who attend college appear to be caught between social worlds — reluctant to “marry down” to partners with less education and unable to “marry up” to those from more privileged upbringings. Lower marriage chances appear to stem from men’s and women’s mismatched social origins and educational attainment — a phenomenon Musick and co-authors refer to as “marriage market mismatch.”

“College students are becoming more diverse in their social backgrounds, but they nonetheless remain a socio-economically select group,” said Musick, associate professor of policy analysis and management in the College of Human Ecology. “It may be difficult for students from less privileged backgrounds to navigate social relationships on campus, and these difficulties may affect what students ultimately gain from the college experience.”

Musick hoped the findings could raise awareness of potential social barriers faced by first-generation college students ? barriers that could be keeping students from participating fully in the academic and social opportunities colleges have to offer.

For the study, Musick and sociologists at the University of California-Los Angeles estimated the propensity of men’s and women’s college attendance based on family income, parental education and other indicators of social background and early academic achievement. They then grouped their subjects into social strata based on these propensity scores and compared marriage chances of college- and non-college-goers within each stratum. Estimates were based on a sample of about 3,200 Americans from the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, followed from adolescence into adulthood.

They found that college attendance negatively affected marriage chances for the least advantaged individuals — lessening men’s and women’s odds by 38 percent and 22 percent, respectively. By comparison, among those in the highest social stratum, men who attend college increase their marrying chances by 31 percent and women by 8 percent.

Musick said that past studies have shown “college is the great equalizer” in the labor market, dampening social class differences. But the same can’t be said for the marriage market.

“This research demonstrates the importance of differentiating between social background and educational achievement,” she said. “Educational achievement may go far in reducing income differences between men and women from different social backgrounds, but social and cultural distinctions may persist in social and family relationships.”
